Hand-Held Metal Detector Instructor Certification Course PRSSO212A (Nationally Recognised)

This course is designed for instructors responsible for developing officers’ skills in the use of a hand-held metal detector (HHMD) working within either front-line policing or a protective security program such as an airport, courthouse, corrections (visitor screening), nightclubs, sporting or entertainment venue, etc. The course is designed to supplement their existing skills and allows for individual agencies differences in regards to laws and procedures.

The class includes the subjects:

• how metal detection works
• capabilities & limitations of the HHMD
• common “false” signals
• care, maintenance, operation
• carriage of the HHMD
• positioning persons to be screened
• using the HHMD to screen persons
• acknowledgment of positive signals.

Course Prerequisites: Students attending this course must be existing law enforcement instructors within their own jurisdiction with experience in teaching theoretical and practical skills.

Course Description: This is a four hour course. Students will receive theoretical instruction regarding the operation of the HHMD and then participate in hands on activity. Students will demonstrate the skills of operating the Fisher CW-10 HHMD in practice situations and scenarios. Assessment will occur at the end of the class by way of written test, practical demonstration test and teach-back assessment.

Course materials: Students will receive an Instructors manual, student manual, PowerPoint multimedia, and assessment documents to allow them to conduct a hand-held metal detector basic course.

Course Assessment: Written and practical assessments are required for certification.

Award: On successful completion of the course, students will be awarded a “Hand-Held Metal Detector" Instructor certificate from VAST Academy. Certification is valid for 3 years.

Hand-Held Metal Detector: This course is taught using the Fisher CW-10 Hand-Held Metal Detector however the skills are transferable to other makes of Hand-Held Metal Detector, designed for security screening.
