Do you wish to start a career in the Security Industry?
Security Licensing in NSW is run by the Security Industry Registry which is a Department of the NSW Police Service and is controlled by the NSW Security Industry Act 1997 and the NSW Security Industry Amendment Act 2005. All new entrants to the NSW Security Industry must complete the pre-licence course for the security activities they wish to perform.
As a new entrant we recommend that you complete the Provisional 1A/G and Provisional 1C as a general start to the Industry
To obtain a Provisional Security Licence in NSW new entrants will be required to complete the Certificate I Pre-Licensing Course relevant to the licensing category (activity) for which they intend to apply.
i.e. P1A, P1B, P1C, P1D, P1E, P1F, P1G.
The Licence will be issued on the condition that, within 12 months, the licensee will be required to gain employment within the industry and be assessed in the workplace, on no less than 4 occasions, by an approved RTO and complete additional training.
At the completion of the 12 months employment the licensee will be eligible to apply for an unconditional Licence upon production of a Certificate relevant to the class of Licence sought i.e. Certificate II or Certificate III in Security Operations
follows:
- Must be over the age of 18 years
- Candidates must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Candidates must undergo a Pre Training Criminal History
Clearance prior to commencing the course.
Offences preventing you from holding a licence, includes:
- offences involving Firearms or Weapons
- offences involving Assault
- offences involving Prohibited Drugs
- offences involving Theft, Stealing or Fraud
- offences involving Robbery
- offences involving Industrial Relations matters
- Candidates must pass a Language, Literacy and Numeracy Assessment to equivalency of Year 9
Candidates failing to pass the LLN Assessment are reported to the Security Industry Registry (SIR). These candidates are then referred to TAFE for further LLN Training.
Job roles within the security industry fall under the following Licence classes:
1A Mobile / static Guard Unarmed
1B Body Guard
1C Crowd / venue controller, bouncer
1D Dog Handler
1E Monitoring Centre Operator
1F Armed Guard
1G Loss Prevention Officer
If you don't already hold a Security Licence you will need to commence with the Certificate I in Security Operations (Pre Licence) Course.
