Security Licensing in NSW is run by the Security Industry Registry which is a Department of the NSW Police Force and is controlled by the NSW Security Industry Act 1997 and the NSW Security Industry Amendment Act 2005 and respective regulations. 

To obtain a Provisional Security Licence in NSW, new entrants are required to complete a Certificate I in Security Operations (Pre Licence) 91190NSW (Nationally Recognised) 

course in relation to the security activity they wish to work within. The licence categories in NSW are:

                   1A/G - Unarmed Guard

                   1C - Crowd Controller

                   1D - Dog Handler

                   1E - Monitoring Centre Operator

                   1F - Armed Guard (CIT only and NON-CIT)

But before any training you need to ask yourself a few questions as these are pre-requisites from anyone wishing to undergo training in NSW. These are:

• Must be 18 years of age or over
• Must be an Asutralian Citizen or Permanent Resident
• Must not be convicted of an offence or offences preventing you from holding a licence which includes:

                                - offences involving Firearms or Weapons

                                - offences involving Assault

                                - offences involving Prohibited Drugs

                                - offences involving Theft, Stealing or Fraud

                                - offences involving Robbery

                                - offences involving Industrial Relations Matters

                                - offences involving gang related or terrorist activities

Candidates must aslo pass a Language, Literacy and Numeracy Assessment to the equivalency standard of a Year 9 school student. Candidates who fail to pass the LLN Assessment are reported to the Security Industry Registry (SIR) and are then recommended/referred to TAFE for further LLN training and certification.

After the completion of the course and assessment and you apply and are granted a licence from the NSW Security Industry, your NSW Security Licence is issued on the condition that within 12months, the licensee will be requried to gain employment within the industry and be assessed a minimum of four (4) times in the workplace by an approved Assessor working for a RTO.

At the completion of the onsite assessments and 12months you are eligable to renew your security licence and  apply for an uncondiational Licence for which you have been assessed and certified against.

Do you need to do your provisional on-site assessments?

Current provisional licence holders, dont leave your onsite assessments to the last minute. You have to reapply for your licence at least four (4) weeks before the expiry so the Security Industry Registry have time to process it. Dont forget you will need at minimum two (2) months inbetween each assessment.
